What to Do Before You Reach Our Office
These first-aid tips can help protect your smile until you are seen:
- Toothache: Rinse with warm salt water, gently floss to remove trapped food, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed. Do not place aspirin directly on the gums.
- Knocked-out tooth: Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root. Gently rinse it without scrubbing and try to place it back in the socket. If you cannot, keep it moist in milk or saliva and call us immediately. The best chance of saving the tooth is within 30 to 60 minutes.
- Chipped or broken tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water, save any broken pieces, and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- Lost crown or filling: Keep the crown if you have it. Avoid chewing on that side and call our office for an appointment.
- Swelling or abscess: Rinse with warm salt water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your face. Do not try to pop or drain the area.
- Soft tissue injury: Rinse gently and apply pressure with clean gauze to control bleeding.
